Welcoming THE Christ – Advent 2017

By Rev. Taurai Emmanuel Maforo

“And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.” Micah 4:2 (KJV)

Glorious Advent greetings to you all my brothers and sisters. I have been in two places in my life that you wouldn’t dare go back to – the hospital and remand prison. While it was never for a period longer than a week, the experiences were not kind. Friends and relatives can come and visit you but can’t change your state. When you watch the faces you know entering, you cannot hold back but smile. If we get so much joy when we see our very own visit us, how much more shall we be overjoyed with welcoming THE Christ? It is that season – ADVENT IS HERE!365 ADVENT ICON1

The 2017 Advent season is now upon us and this week’s meditations shall be based on the advent themes. Advent is a 4-week season set aside before Christmas as a time to prepare for the coming of our long-expected Messiah. It is the great season of anticipation. It provides an opportunity to focus on how God came to us in history in the person of Jesus, comes to us in the present, and will come again in the future. In other words it bears the message of Christ’s reign in the world and hearts of humankind.

As the Jews that were released from captivity rallied each other to Jerusalem, so shall the world that is set free from the capture of sin and the evils of this world rally to Jesus, welcoming the Messiah into their hearts. The conversion of the multitude of the Gentiles to Christ, was a more eminent fulfilling of it. To the temple at Jerusalem, a type of Christ and the gospel church. Worship of the saviour reigns supreme.

Charles Wesley the prolific hymn writer and brother to John Wesley composed a song that locates us well in this season – “Come, thou long-expected Jesus”. In this hymnal high expectation are generated deep within us; “Come, thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set thy people free, From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in thee. By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone, by thine all-sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne.”

It is indeed my prayer for us brethren as we begin this season that we invite our Lord Jesus to enter the darkest parts of our inner self. We have allowed sin, anger, hate, bitterness and greed to rule our hearts – that time is up! If you really feel under the heavy hand of judgement and condemnation – the one Christ has His mission to set us free (John 8:36). If you have felt a huge void in your life, this is your season to welcome Christ.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I have sought out and expected to find rest in human institutions. Unfortunately I have been disappointed and despised more till I condemned myself. With your Advent, Jesus Christ I praise God that I will never again feel that emptiness in my heart – WELCOME LORD JESUS!
